UX (User experience) is often associated with the field of information technology such as direct user experience on websites, or human interaction with the technology environment. Rarely do interior designers use this phrase. However, UX has appeared from the very beginning for interior design in particular and the design industry in general.
1. What is UX in interior design?
When
we walk into an empty room, the first thing that comes to our mind is what to
do with it? Take a tour and take a look around, we wanted to turn that space
into a useable space. Be it the living room, bedroom, or office. A room can
carry out the function we want, depending on the furniture we choose and where
we put it.
An
empty room is usable, but not useful until you put things in it. How do you
interact with the room? This interaction will become your experience when you
directly use it. UX makes that experience great and valuable.
2. Where does UX appear?
Shaping
a functional space can be applied in all types of works, from civil to
commercial. UX can appear in any space from shops to houses, from kitchens to
living rooms, bedrooms, from details of tables, chairs to lavabo...
Specifically,
UX often appears right from the preliminary design steps combined with planning
and functional zoning. Next, the presence of UX is also reflected in the
arrangement and arrangement of furniture and equipment. It is even seen as an
element of sophistication when combined with detailed design.
3. What factors affect UX?
UX
is associated with sets of norms and standards. Because norms and standards are
drawn up based on people's experience and anthropometry by age, gender, even
geographical location, cultural practices, and even the culture of that place.
... When space is determined to be designed, we must consider the factors
affecting it.
Perspectives
may differ from person to person, but for us: “The user of the space is the
focus”. Understanding standards and UX can be considered the first step in
planning and interior design. This can be considered a mandatory condition to
be able to organize a layout that is scientific and suitable for users. This is
also the most important factor in achieving a balance between aesthetic value
and function.
4. How is UX defined?
In
interior design, one of the near-brain factors we often ask ourselves is: Does
UX play an important role in the form and function' of Interior Design? The
answer is: Very important. A space is usually not tied to the concept of UX
until the space has been defined for its function. For example, We received an
assignment from a client to design an office, including a telesales department.
The
first thing we care about and clearly define is that the telesales department
needs to have a separate space, enough soundproofing but easily connected to
the overall. Next, we will discuss the form and shape of this space. The colors,
as well as the detailed layout, are then taken into account throughout the
system. Determining the specific UX of an audience takes more than one's actual
user experience. It requires a lot of research and understanding of a team.
There
is even information that you must ask for advice from the investor. By simply
the space you design, it's beautiful and civilized but still serves users and
increases their enjoyable experience. At that time, they realized that we do
care about UX.
Conclusion
In
short, UX appears everywhere in interior design and it directly affects our
daily lives. That is also the reason why we often tell our team: "Put
yourself in the customer's shoes to think about space". Even when
consulting, ask them how their living habits are, by asking them to describe
activities in the pre-design space.
Interior design is a little different from fashion products,
graphics, and interactive design. With products from other fields, we can look
at them, hold them in our hands, wear them or put them on the table... But for
furniture (or architecture), we have to GO ENTER and EXPERIENCE it.
